How to Find Oil Leaks on a Honda

Finding the oil leak in your Honda is extremely important because the oil in your engine is used for lubrication and cooling of the cylinders. If your engine loses all of the oil due to a leak, the engine will seize and require serious engine repair. Even small leaks require your attention because they can turn into a much larger leak over time. Not only can oil leaks cause your engine harm, but they also damage driveways and cause the roadways to become slippery for all motorists and pedestrians.

ModerateInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • UV dye
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • UV glasses
  • UV flashlight
  1. Step 1

    Prop open the hood.

  2. Step 2

Open the oil cap on the valve cover and place UV (ultra-violet) dye in the oil crankcase. The dye is available at most auto parts retailers and will be packaged in a small container.

  3. Step 3

Run the engine for at least five minutes to allow the dye to circulate through the engine. If you have more time, drive the vehicle around the block a few times to ensure that the dye gets to all parts of the engine.

  4. Step 4

Jack up the Honda and place it on jack stands. Keep the vehicle on.

  5. Step 5

Put the UV glasses on and crawl beneath the engine.

  6. Step 6

Use a UV flashlight and aim it at any potential areas for an oil leak until you locate where the leak is coming from. The source of the leak will be easily discernible because of the dye that you placed in the oil; the source of the leak will be bright yellow in color. You can wipe the area down and check again to make sure that is where the leak is coming from.
