1999 Dodge RAM 2500 Thermostat Installation

It's likely that your 1999 Dodge RAM 2500 has lived a life of hauling and towing heavy payloads and hard acceleration. Although a Dodge Ram is built to take a lot of abuse, a part that costs a couple of dollars is all that stands between another hundred thousand miles and a lengthy stay at a repair facility, waiting for an engine rebuild. Replacing the thermostat to ensure the engine cools properly is cheap insurance for a vehicle that has a lot of hard miles on it.

Difficulty:
Moderately EasyInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • 1999 Dodge RAM 2500 thermostat
  • 1999 Dodge RAM 2500 thermostat gasket
  • Radiator fluid
  • Small bucket
  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench
  1. Step 1

Remove the top radiator hose from the Dodge Ram by loosening the retaining clamp that holds the hose to the Ram's intake thermostat cover. Pull the hose off and drain the fluid that is in the hose into a small bucket. This prevents the fluid from spilling onto the engine. Since the hose is not removed from the radiator, it will need to be pushed off to the side while the thermostat is being replaced.

  2. Step 2

Remove the bolts that hold the intake thermostat cover to the Ram's intake manifold. The bolts will be reused, so they should not be thrown away. Remove the intake thermostat cover from the engine by pulling up on it to break the gasket seal.

  3. Step 3

Remove the old thermostat gasket and replace it with a new one. The gasket should remain dry during the installation process, to ensure proper sealing.

  4. Step 4

Pull the old thermostat out of the intake manifold and replace it with the new one. Dodge marks their thermostats with the word "Up" on one end. This end should protrude from the intake. If the thermostat is not placed into the engine correctly, it will not cool the engine properly.

  5. Step 5

Place the intake thermostat cover onto the intake manifold, and bolt it back into place. Reattach the radiator hose and clamp it into place.

  6. Step 6

Replace the lost antifreeze with new antifreeze via the radiator filler cap.
