How to Replace Rotors on a 2000 Regal

The 2000 model Buick Regal has disc brakes in both the front and rear. Disc brakes consist of a brake rotor and hydraulic caliper on each wheel, controlled by a vacuum assisted master cylinder. The master cylinder delivers pressurized brake fluid to the calipers and is controlled by pressure on the brake pedal. When pressurized, the caliper clamps the brake pads onto the rotor. Brake rotors are supported by the wheel hub and are prone to wear and warping. Damaged rotors must be removed and re-machined (turned) or replaced to maintain the maximum braking power for your Regal.

Difficulty:
Moderately EasyInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Lug nut wrench
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wrench
  • C-clamp
  • Bungee strap
  • Foot/pound (ft/lb) torque wrench
  1. Step 1

Loosen the lug nuts with a lug nut wrench. Turn the lug nuts counterclockwise just enough to break the torque.

  2. Step 2

Raise the front end of the vehicle with a jack. Support the vehicle with a set of jack stands. Apply the parking brake.

  3. Step 3

Finish removing the lug nuts with the lug nut wrench. Pull the wheel off the lugs, then set it aside.

  4. Step 4

Remove the caliper mounting bolts and the caliper bracket bolts with a wrench. Collapse the caliper with a C-clamp, then remove it from the rotor. Suspend the caliper out of the way with a bungee strap or a piece of wire. Do not allow the caliper to hang by its brake hose or hose damage may occur.

  5. Step 5

Pull the brake rotor off the wheel hub by hand. Align the stud holes on the new or reconditioned rotor with the wheel studs, then slide the rotor onto the wheel hub.

  6. Step 6

Put the caliper back on and then remount the tire.

  7. Step 7

Torque the lug nuts to 100-ft/lbs with a torque wrench.

  8. Step 8

Repeat the steps for each wheel.
