I have a 94 ford explorer. The mechs(3 in all) that worked on the brakes replaced the master cyl., front rotors, pads, rear drum hardware, shoes, and couldn't bleed the brakes. they are antilock. I suspect that the dump valve in the mod. assmb. is sticking or being held open somehow resulting in no pedal, and acting as if it has a bad master cyl. )ie the brakes are so bad that even pumping them doesnt cyl.
Eveyone I talk too looks at me like Im a nut when I explain what i think it is...could this (a sticking dump valve in the mod assb) cause pedal drop and no brakes to speak of? hep me Im going broke here!! Need scan tool to properly bleed system. Have that done then manually bleed system again. thanks for the info, I had read that the fluid must be tracked thru the system with a scan tool. However I was hoo doed the first time because the mech said he had one. Should I go through the extra expense of checking the mod valve assb. if this doesnt work. (there is a method of checking the mod. vlave assb without replacing it by blocking off the Master cyl and checking dump valve). again thanks. Looks like a visit to the ford dealership is in order. that is 20 miles from here. After looking at some resources, the hydraulic portion of the brake system should be conventional. If the pedal goes to the floor with no resistance, then I would question if the master cylinder was completely bled. Or if the master cylinder was depressed completely with no fluid in the bore causing a cup to flip over. If there was no problem with this before, then the shop is responsible for the fix. Sounds like you found a place that is not completely up to date on vehicles. The ABS needs to be bled after the mechanical bleed has been completed and then another mechanical bleed needs to be done. Good luck.
