I have a 89 plymoth voyager. The problem is the front passenger side disc brake locks up. I replaced the caliper and still have this problem. I jacked the wheel off the ground and put the car in neutral and tried to spin the tire by hand but it was locked up tight. I then opened the bleed screw and brake fluid squirted out which seemed under pressure and i was then able to turn the tire by hand. It appears that when i hit the brakes the caliper works but doesn't release when i take my foot off the pedal. Any advice will be appreciated. My 1997 mustang has problems with the left rear caliper/brake. I'm on my third caliper and it still seems to wear out my pads in no time, mainly the inside pad. I just put in a new caliper, rotor disc and pads. While on the way to work, that side got heated up really bad. Any ideas why this is happening? If this is only one side, I would suspect a bad caliper and or brake hose. I like to replace them together anyway to make sure I fix the problem and as part of maintenance. if both front brakes are hot or dragging then you probably have a master cylinder problem.
On the Mustang, I would doubel check the emergency brake cable to make sure it is releasing properly. Also take a good look at the caliper slide pins that bridge the inner and outer pads together. You might want to add some white lithium grease to the caliper slides to make sure both sides release properly. With your "new" caliper, you might be transfering the old caliper pin and mounting bolts, which should be replaced and a thin layer of grease added to them during installation. Thanks, you were right on with the brakes on my mustang. The one side was ceased right up and was causing my brakes to not release. I replaced the caliper sliders and it works like new. Thanks again Good job......you should win something! Thanks for the update. Hello All !! I have the exact problem with my 1992 plymouth voyager, it has 125,560 miles and the right "passenger" side locks up. I have replaced the rotor, caliper, and pads with no avail. someone mentioned it could be a perportioning? valve under the master clynder sticking. I can release the pressure with the bleading screw and spin the wheel freely until I press the brake pedel 2 or 3 times then it locks up again until I bleed it again, does any one have any ideas ?
Thanks
Reed Try replacing the brake hose first! They are cheaper then the proportioning valve. They can get constricted inside causing that problem, they can also cause slow caliper response too.
