It has been snowy lately and the roads coated in snow removal crap (salt, ash, rocks, etc). Anyway, about 3-4 days ago I started noticing a sound when I apply pressure to my brakes. Appears to be front right. It is a single popping noise, sort of like the cracking of a joint. After it "pops" once, it doesn't do it again until I accelerate and brake again.. The brakes were replaced last summer and though I do drive kinda like crap I don't think I need brakes. I checked my rotors and they appear to be fine. This happens at any speed but only after accelerating, not when I brake after just coasting.
I wasn't too worried about it, but then this morning I was backing from my garage and applied light pressure and this vibrating low rumbly noise came from my brakes. I released and applied pressure again and again the noise came. I paused and then did it a third time and the noise was gone and hasn't yet returned.
Someone said it could be a CV joint or wheel bearing, but I can't get anyone to look at it until Saturday and I work full time and need my vehicle for work. If it were something serious I could probably borrow a vehicle but I wouldnt want to do that unless I absolutely had too. Does anyone think it's safe to wait til Saturday? I drive approx 20 miles total a day, country roads, not much stop and go but a lot of hills and braking is required. I really don't want to screw anything up.
I bought the car new in 02, it has around 70k miles on it, and nothing has really been done to it, just the standard stuff, brake pads, tune ups, oil changes, coolant flush, etc. I don't think I've ever had the wheel bearings or CV joint replaced or looked at.. Honestly I don't even know what they are
Thanks to anyone who can help..
Belle. The vibrating low rumbly noise is probably your ABS (antilock brake system) kicking in. This is to be expected if your driveway is coated with packed snow or has icy patches. It is normal.
As for the rest of the situation, the single popping noise, that isn't enough information to diagnose a problem if indeed there is one. It may be nothing more than knocking off an icy crust. Then again, who knows. If you have a bad CV joint (this does not sound like it is) there is no urgency. The same is true if you generally have normal braking and handling. Check it out on Saturday, drive with caution until then. I don't have abs and the driveway was clear.
But thanks.
