I recently replaced the rotors and front brake pads on my 04 Grand Am. I noticed that on both left and right sides that the outer pad had a lot of pad left as compared to the inner pad, which was basically nothing. What would cause this and how do I fix it so it doesn't happen again? Thanks in advance for any ideas.
Just changing the Pads and not changing the Caliper can lead to this type of wear on your front Brakes. Inside the Caliper is a Piston and a Seal , and over time because Brake Fluid is hygroscopic (meaning it can absord moisture) contaminants build up inside the calipers and the piston does not move so easily. sometimes even seizing up.I did a brake job once, and just changed only the pads and a week later the customer said his brakes were worn out,but I warned him before hand, but he still wanted the cheaper option.Another critical factor in brakes system health is to flush your brake fluid to make sure it is really clean. If I were you I would get a set of Loaded or Unloaded Calipers and change them ,then your wear on your brakes should be even.
If the inside pads are BOTH worn down, more than likely it is not the caliper, but more than likely the caliper slides. If you clean all the mounting surfaces and lubricate the contact areas with high temperature brake lubricant, your problems should go away.Car Repair Talk's forum.
