Does anyone know what needs to be done to the brake system on a car that has been in storage over 10 years? The brakes currently do not work and the fluid seems to have turned into a thick sticky substance.
at the least, u should flush the entire system.if the fluid is really bad, u will end up replacing everything, and maybe the lines also. sometimes, u can flush and bleed, but if it fails on u a week later, ......
what kind of car is it? if u do the work yourself, it may not cost as much as u think. its not that difficult.
Thanks for your reply Rickm. The car is a 1975 Buick Electra. Do you think the gook would clean out with a normal brake flush?
NICE CAR!!!!! the gook might clean out but most likely the damage is done. i do alot of resto and research work. i did ok in a.r. but im starving here in t.x. because of the rust. if the gook is brown, its because the fluid has" turned" . that means that it has changed into a lite solvent. bad 4 the rubber in your system. lite brown, it has drawn moisture. this will rust the cyl walls of all your major parts. rust brings pits. pits bring leaks ect. if the fluid leans toward the red side, especially when u bleed, this is rust. those old steel brake lines might look good but might b rusted inside.this causes week spots that u will only find when someone stops quickly in front of u .im not trying 2 scare u. i do want u 2 b careful. go ahead and thoroughly bleed your system, twice. i would remove all 4 wheels and block it up. this makes it easier. as u bleed, check 2 c if each brake is working. check your emergencybrake. its not hyd. so if the cables r good you will always have back brakes. after u bleed and all brakes work, grab the steering wheel and smash the brakes as hard as you can several times. the thinking here is if its going to rupture something, let it happen now, not on the road. maybe u will b lucky. i hope so. i understand your strong desire 2 drive your new investment. i havevnt even seen it but i want 2 drive it 2!! b carful. good brakes r relatively cheap. even if they seem good now, after sitting up so long they will be tired. best of luck, friend. keep us posted.
Get a couple gallons of brake fluid, put the car up on jack stands and take all the tires off, then disconnect all four brake lines and have someone keep dumping in fluid while you pump the brakes. For good measure I would replace any rubber type hoses related to the brake system because they are probably dry rotted.Car Repair Talk's forum.
