My son is trying to do his own front brake job. We have seen pits on the inside of both rotors and a funny gouge in in outside of both rotors. He has removed the calipers and the passenger side rotor just slid right off. The drivers side rotor is very stubborn though. We have not been able to get it off the hub. Any ideas?
They can be a real bear to get off.
First off: don't be afraid to use force.
You can beat the tar out of the rotor without damaging the hub that it's sticking to. Use a nice large sledgehammer (AKA: BFH)
Penetrating spray helps.
You can also put the wheel (and brakes) back on and leave the lugs very loose. Then start the vehicle and hold the brake while you shift between reverse and drive. This moves the drive shaft and wheel hub while the brakes hold on to the rotor. It usually is enough to loosen it to where it falls off when you remove the wheel again. You can give it some acceleration while trying to loosen it up... just make sure you have a firm foot on the brake.
Of course, you will have the wheel to catch the vehicle if you happen to fall (drive) off of the jack.
Be careful...Car Repair Talk's forum.
