Brake Light Error Indicator Stays On

My dash indicator for light bulb problems comes on even though all of my lights are working properly. How do I troubleshoot what is wrong?

It's a 1996 Toyota Avalon.

The indicator is off until the first time that I press the brake pedal. Then it comes on.

It sounds like a brake light problem, but all of my brake lights work fine.

Since this only happens when brake pedal is pushed I would check under the brake pedal for possible adjustment of the "brake light switch" (I know this is not the correct term), maybe someone can correct me. Anyhow, when you apply the brakes this "item" under the pedal turns the brake lights on and when you release the pedal it shuts the light off.

This is usually adjusted with brake jobs but I have seen them stick or need adjustment in the interim. If it is not working properly this may be the reason why your dash warning comes on.
