Hi there
I am having trouble with the cooling fan, it does not switch on so my radiator over heats. Will this cost me heaps of $$$$ to fix or will it be fairly cheap.
Subaru legacy 1990 The cost of repair is impossible to determine unless we know why the fan will not operate. It could be as cheap and simple as a blown fuse or you could have major wiring problem on your hands that will require hours of work to diagnose and repair.
You could also have a bad fan motor, a faulty fan relay, a bad coolant temperature switch or several other problems.
Some simple things you can check are the fuses and the electrical connection at the fan motor itself.
If the car is equipped with A/C and it still works you can start the engine and turn on the A/C, when the compressor engages or shortly there after you can use a test light to check for power and ground at the electrical connector for the fan motor. Dont let the A/C run for more than just a couple of minutes without the fan working or damage may occur to the A/C system. If you have power and ground the fan motor is bad, if not you will have to back trace the circuit to find the problem. But if you dont have a wiring diagram and the proper tools you wont get too far. This would be better left to an electrical shop or someone equipped to trace out the circuit and find the problem.
Good luck
