My neice informed me this evening that she accidentally put about a half gallon of Windshield Washer Fluid in the Engine Coolant system of her car. I quizzed her further and discovered that she did not put it in the Radiator directly, but into the Coolant Reservoir.
She asked me if this would be a problem, and what to do. I suggested she get the whole system flushed, but I am no mechanic and don't know if that is an over-reaction on my part. I didn't seem able to convince her to do it anyways, but I am concerned. Is Windshield Washer fluid dangerous to have in the Coolant system? I can tell you that it was a winterized version. Something that said it could partially de-ice your windshield as well as clean.
I'm concerned that it could do some damage and want to be able to convince her to do something about it. However, if it is harmless, then let me know... I admit, I have no clue. Any help would be appreciated. We get this identical question often. This kind of mistake is more common than you think.
Tell your niece to forget about it. This is a harmless mistake. She has done the equivalent of topping up her reservoir with water. There is no need to go through the expense and inconvenience of a flush. I just wanted to say thanx for your quick response. I informed my neice and she was happy to hear it. Good to know.
Thanx again and have a Great Day!!
