intake gasket leaks dex-cool 68.000miles 98chev 1/2 5.7L

My 1998 chev 1/2 with 5.7L engine leakes antifreeze under the front centre of engine since Jan 20 The chev dealer said it was the intake gasket ends were leaking. Cost $ 1,700 to change gasket
A local Garage confirmed and $900.00 to change intake gasket. Both places want to put new dex-cool back in or no guarantee if i get them to put the green stuff in. There is a lot of complaints by chevy owners that dex-cool causes this problem on every chevy product therefore I must wait until April or May to do the job myself. My question is : does anyone know if this engine has a tendency to leak coolant internally? So far I have only added 1quart of antifreeze should i continue driving 80 miles a week? Your story rings bells. I believe I've read about the problem you are having.

How often do you have to put that 1 quart of coolant in?

Anyway, it'll be hard to find a mechanic who'll "convert" an engine from Dexcool. Even molecular mixing of Dexcool with the green stuff isn't good.

But I have heard of several people flushing their engines of dex and replacing it with green and they had no problem. Of course you want to flush REALLY thoroughly.

But you have a 350 (5.7). I don't think they've changed so much that an intake gasket is that hard to replace. You will save a mint doing this yourself. And you'll gain a $15 repair manual to boot.

The problem with running the engine with an internal leak is... where is it going? If it's going in the combustion chamber, then it'll keep the carbon from building up. But I don't know how far I'd want to drive with the cylinders getting steam cleaned continuously. Probably not too good for the lubrication.

Which brings me to the possibility that the internal leak is putting coolant in your crankcase / oil. This will turn your engine to a paperweight quickly if the oil pump picks up any engine coolant. I'd at least throw some Bar's stop leak in the radiator (with the pellets) if you absolutely have to drive it.

But invest in a repair manual and read up on the intake gasket replacement procedure. Once you price a gasket set you just might decide to do this yourself. Any specialty tools are lent out for free from Autozone (like torque wrench).Car Repair Talk's forum.
