My radiator fans wouldn't come on today and the Neon was overheating. Then after some driving, the fans are working normally again. I have checked the fuse and the relay is in good shape. I suspect the thermal switch is going bad. Where is it. I have no Hayne's manual right now and I think I will have to do this job before I can get one to the house. Anyone been that deep into a Neon yet?
If ya got to go to the parts store to get the part, buy the manual while you are there.
For a temporary fix you could always unplug the fans from the wiring harness and run a jumper wire to a switch and then run a hot wire off the battery or ignition, that's what i did to my olds cutlass before i fixed it right. Half.com is my site. I haven't bought a new book in a year now and I have more money for parts to show for it. I'll even buy the parts on line. I don't know why I need car or my trucks. I never drive to town to shop anymore. The Neon doesn't have a thermal switch. The output from the coolant temperature sensor is fed to the engine controller (outboard of the battery). This part controls fan operation. If I'm starting to have intermittent problems with this, will I need a new control module? Well, it's either the coolant temperature sensor, the controller, or the relay. Of course, it could also be the fan motor, but that's easy to test. I'd start by replacing the fan relay. That's cheap. I was switching my know good relays around to test that part. I wish it were that simple. The sensor is my next target. I could use uneedapart to find a controller. The sensor would be an easy one to get. It may have been a fluke too. I don't want to find out the hard way though.Car Repair Talk's forum.
