Replacing Air Conditioner Condenser on Scion tc

I am wondering if this is something I can do on my own, and save a few hundred bucks.

The a/c condenser on my 06 scion tc was damaged, and i took it into a repair shop to get an estimate on the fix. They said only the condenser was damaged, and it'd cost 650 to replace it with aftermarket parts. I found an aftermarket condenser for around $100 for an 06 tc, and it looks like i would just need to undo some screws, pull off a hose or two and pull the old one out and drop the new one in.

Am I being stupid, or is this a decently easy fix/something I can do on my own? I don't have any real automotive background, but I'd like to at least pretend I'm decent at fixing things.

(if i only spent ~$50 on new Freon, sealant, etc, I would still be saving $4000-500. So that's my motivation)

thanks for your help,
Willy well, u may be able to replace the condenser ok yourself, but its the other stuff thats gonna cause problems. a/c work aint a diy job unless u got the training and equipment for it.

unless u got a refrigerant recovery and recycling machine in the corner of your garage

your gonna need a vacuum pump, a set of manifold gauges, a refrigerant weight scale and a 30 lb tank of r134a. dont even think of using the little 'suicide cans' for this.

u allso need to replace the o-rings on the connections, and the desicant bag in the receiver/dryer.

if u replace the parts u may find a shop thatll do the vacuuming and recharge. but most shops wont do that on a diy parts replacement, and if they do, u most likely wouldnt get a warranty with it. plus, if u replace the desicant bag, by the time u get it to a shop to finish the job, the bag will be saturated with moisture and be no good.

btw, i aint real big on aftermarket a/c parts, especialy if its 4 seasons brand. oe will cost more but last longer and work better.

your best bet is to leave this to a pro, as long as u trust the place and get a decent warranty. a good shop will allso check the rest of the system for leaks and make sure theres leak detection dye in the system. i know u wanna save $$$ like all of us, but a/c is one of them things that can cause u a lot of greif if it aint done right, and in the end u may wish u took it to a shop to start with.
