1995 Escort wagon Cooling System Bleeding

Hi

My 1995 Escort wagon has a cooling system that never reaches the normal temperature.

The temp gauge stays at about 10 o'clock instead of 12 o'clock after the normal warm up period.

My local Ford service dept suggested I need to have the cooling system bled of air.

They were unclear how to do this.

Any suggestions please?

Bob What have you done to try to remedy the problem? Has the thermostat been changed? Usually if air is in the cooling system, the vehicle will overheat instead of running cooler. I have replaced the thermostat twice and most recently I've flushed the system.

Bob It could possibly be the temperature sending unit that is not reading correctly. Does the heat work properly? If it is still getting as hot as it should, the problem is probably in the sending unit or the gauge. another thing to look at is the radiator cooling fan. with the engine on and a/c off, does the fan run all the time, even when the engine is cold? or does it cycle on and off at operating temp? Yes I changed the thermostat.

The temp guage appears to be working properly going up and down, just never to the 12 o'clock (normal) position. Heater does not give hot air, just warm.

The radiator fan does not run constantly.

How do I bleed the system?

Bob is the new thermostat the proper one? oe spec for this engine is 195 degrees.

i agree with way2old that air in the system would cause it to run too hot, not too cool. but if u insist...

look on the thermostat housing and see if theres a bleeder screw on it. if so, youll need to drain the coolant down below the level of the housing. then loosen the screw and slowly refill the system. when coolant runs smoothly out of the screw, with no air spurts, tighten it back down and finish filling the system.

if theres no bleeder screw, take off the radiator cap with the engine cold. start it and turn the heater on and run it til the thermostat opens and coolant starts circulating. rev the engine a few times. any air in the system should make its way to the radiator and burp out thru the filler neck. if this happens the coolant level will drop so youll need to top it off.
