Ford Escort battery light is flashing intermittently

I have a 1996 Ford Escort LX with 94,000 miles on it. Today, the battery light has started flashing intermittently; the light seems rather faint and fades out every few seconds. The battery is only a year old, and the car still seems to be running fine. What could be causing this?

The battery light does not indicate the condition of the battery,it warns you that the alternator is having a problem. This could be a loose wire, worn or loose belt, or alternator failure. check the connection at the back of the alternator (the heavy gauge wire) if the terminal is loose or discoloured repair it check the belt if it is dry and cracked it could be slipping or the tensioner may be failing to keep the belt tight. if these are ok probably time for an alternator. most auto parts stores will test the alt. for you before you buy one.
